Special Prom for Special Students

Prom is a special night for all teenagers but words could not o describe the reaction of the local community, when Ferncliff Manor held its inaugural prom for teenagers with special needs, on June 26; the girls spent hours getting their hair and makeup done while the boys sported tuxedos and bow ties. The smiles on their faces, as they rode in a luxurious black limousine to a catering hall, where a disc jockey was spinning tunes, said it all.

Founded in 1935 Ferncliff Manor was one of the first private schools to specialize in the care and treatment of individuals with disabilities. Ferncliff provides a full range of high quality educational, therapeutic and health care services to children with developmental disabilities offering close personal attention, structure and stimulation in a safe, secure environment that fosters growth and development.

Donated decorations provided a party atmosphere. The formal gowns for the young ladies were also donated as was the hire limo and DJ. The beat of the music soon got all the children, family members, staff and friends moving - regardless of their physical challenges. Some danced, stomping their feet and waving their hands. Others sat in wheelchairs and bobbed their torsos as fervently as they could. While others let friends wheel them around, with big smiles on their faces.

It was truly a very special prom. The generosity of all the people who helped will resonate for a very long time. Though it took tremendous time and effort to pull it all together, the outcome was so positive that the staff has already decided to go bigger and better next year.
